Greige colour is a soft neutral halfway between grey and beige, named after raw silk. Because it holds both, it shifts with the light: a warm 2,700 K bulb pushes it towards beige, a neutral 4,000 K white towards grey. It pairs with off-white, pale wood, linen, terracotta, black and brass.
Greige has replaced magnolia in a lot of Irish homes, yet it is the shade that surprises people most on the walls: too yellow in the evening, too grey on a dull morning. This guide helps you read its undertone, pair it and choose the bulbs and light fittings that keep it the colour you picked.
What colour is greige? Between grey and beige, born from silk
Greige is the colour of silk in its raw state, before any bleaching or dyeing. The word comes from the French grège, from the Italian seta greggia, raw silk, which French dictionaries define as a light beige leaning towards grey. In the textile trade, greige goods are fabrics straight off the loom, not yet dyed or bleached. So the name is not really a blend of “grey” and “beige”, even if it describes the colour perfectly.
Greige, beige, taupe or grey: the differences
| Colour | Made of | On a wall | Under warm light |
|---|---|---|---|
| Greige | Grey and beige in near-equal parts | Soft, bright, calming | Slides towards beige |
| Beige | Light yellow and brown, no grey | Warm, sunny | Turns golden, sometimes yellow |
| Taupe | Grey and brown | Deep, enveloping | Turns browner |
| Warm grey | Grey with a hint of yellow or brown | Calm, more mineral | Warms up, stays grey |
Taupe, a greyish brown, is darker and earthier than greige. Our guide to taupe colour covers the deeper shade.
Warm greige or cool greige? Read the undertone
Every greige leans cool or warm, and that undertone decides which colours and which light suit it.
- A cool greige holds more grey, sometimes a touch of green. Crisp and mineral, it suits bright, south-facing rooms.
- A warm greige holds more beige, with a hint of yellow or pink. Softer and cosier, it warms up a north-facing room.
To read the undertone, hold the sample against a sheet of white printer paper in daylight: the yellow, pink or green shows at once. Here are six reference shades we use to place a greige.
Why greige changes colour with the light
A red or a blue holds its own under almost any light. Greige has low saturation: it reflects light almost equally across the spectrum, so it takes on the colour of the bulb, and a small change is enough to tip it from grey to beige.
The metamerism trap
Two greiges that match in the shop can part ways at home. This is metamerism: a paint and a fabric look identical under one light and different under another. Compare your samples together, in the room, in daylight and then under your own bulbs.
North-facing or south-facing
A north-facing room gets cool, bluish sky light that pushes greige towards grey, and Ireland’s frequent overcast skies make that light cooler still: choose a warm greige there. A south-facing room gets warmer light that can make a warm greige look yellow late in the day, so a cool greige holds its balance better.
The best light for greige walls: 2,700, 3,000 or 4,000 K?
The colour of white light is measured in kelvins (K): the lower the number, the warmer the light.
| Colour temperature | On a warm greige | On a cool greige | Where to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2,700 K, warm white | Golden beige, very cosy | Warmed, soft | Living room, bedroom |
| 3,000 K, crisp warm white | Warm beige, close to the chart | Balanced | Hall, landing, kitchen |
| 4,000 K, neutral white | True greige | Drifts towards grey | Worktop, home office |
| 6,500 K, daylight | Greyish, a little flat | Cold grey | Avoid in living spaces |
For a warm greige, choose 3,000 K to see your paint chart colour in the evening, or 2,700 K for a more golden mood. For a cool greige, 2,700 K is the most flattering. In living spaces, we recommend staying at 3,000 K or below, in line with the French health agency Anses, which advises warm white light at home. Our guide to LED bulbs explains how to read the box.
One colour temperature per room, and a good CRI
A 2,700 K pendant next to a 4,000 K ceiling light draws a beige patch and a grey patch on the same greige wall: keep one colour temperature per room. Since 1 September 2021, EU ecodesign rules have required a colour rendering index (CRI) of at least 80 for most bulbs; a CRI of 90 tells a warm greige from a cool one far better.
What colours go with greige?
- Off-white lifts greige, where brilliant white makes it look dirty. The same off-white is the backdrop of Scandinavian style.
- Pale wood and natural fibres, oak, ash, linen, rattan, carry on its warmth. This trio sits at the heart of Japandi style.
- Terracotta, rust and ochre give a warm greige character in a cushion or an armchair. Next door, greige also calms a terracotta bedroom.
- Black, in thin lines on a frame, a table leg or a light fitting, gives greige structure.
- Greyed greens and blues: sage, olive and eucalyptus suit every greige; grey blue and navy extend a cool one.
- Grey works tone on tone with cool greiges; for the greys that suit it, see what colour goes with grey.
To balance a greige living room or bedroom, we use the 60/30/10 split: about 60% greige on the walls, 30% off-white or wood on furniture and textiles, 10% accent. The light fitting often belongs to that 10%.
Beige, linen and brass light fittings for a greige interior
A light fitting sets the colour of the light, so of the walls, and adds a material.
Beige fabric and linen: filtered light
A beige fabric or linen shade adds its own warmth to the bulb’s, and greige slides gently towards beige in the evening. Felt pendants, beige cone pendants and ceiling lights in pale wood and opal glass carry on that softness: browse our beige pendant light and beige chandelier ranges.
Beige ceramic: tone on tone
A beige ceramic wall light blends into a greige wall by day and sculpts it at night; models that light up and down bring out the texture of the paint. See our beige wall light selection.
Brass and gold: the warm accent
Brass and gold reflect a golden glow that warms a cool greige and makes a warm one shine. One small piece is enough, such as an adjustable reading light by an armchair. Brass and black pair well; brass, chrome and gold together muddle the palette. Our gold wall light range has other shapes.
Frequently asked questions about greige colour
What exactly is greige colour?
Greige is a soft neutral between grey and beige, the colour of raw silk before it is bleached or dyed. The name comes from the French grège, raw silk. It is lighter and brighter than taupe and calmer than beige, and it changes noticeably with the light that falls on it.
Is greige more grey or beige?
Both, in near-equal parts, and the balance varies from one paint to another. A cool greige holds more grey, a warm greige more beige. The light decides the rest: under a warm 2,700 K bulb greige reads as beige, under a neutral 4,000 K white it reads as grey.
What colours go with greige?
Off-white, pale wood and linen are the safest partners. For character, add terracotta, ochre or olive green, and a few thin touches of black on a frame or a light fitting. A cool greige also takes grey blues. In metal, brass and gold warm every greige.
What is the difference between greige and taupe?
Taupe is a greyish brown, darker and earthier. Greige is a greyish beige, lighter and brighter. Under warm light, taupe turns browner and greige more beige. They work well together: taupe on a feature wall or a sofa, greige on the other walls.
Is greige still popular in 2026?
Yes, in our view, because it has moved with taste rather than against it. Interiors have shifted from cool greys towards warmer neutrals, and greige sits right in that move. Today’s greiges simply lean a little warmer, with more beige, and pair with pale wood, linen and brass.
What colour bulb is best for greige walls?
A warm white of 2,700 to 3,000 K in living rooms and bedrooms. Choose 3,000 K to see your paint chart colour in the evening, 2,700 K for a more golden mood. Keep 4,000 K for worktops and desks, use the same colour temperature for every light in a room and look for a CRI of 90.
