Kitchen Island Lighting: How to Choose and Hang Kitchen Island Lights

Tips & advice

Pendant light with three opal glass globes on white cords from a round wooden ceiling plate, lit above an oak kitchen island with two stools, in the evening

The best light over a kitchen island is usually a pendant: one large pendant, a row of two or three, or a linear pendant, depending on the length of the island. Hang it low enough to light the worktop without blocking the view across the island, and choose a bright, warm white with good colour rendering.

The island has become the heart of the Irish kitchen: it is where you chop, where the children do their homework, where friends gather with a drink while dinner cooks. Its lighting has to do all of that: light the worktop well enough to work safely, and set the tone for the whole room, especially in an open-plan kitchen that runs into the living area. Our range of kitchen pendant lights covers every shape, from glass globes to linear LED bars. This guide helps you choose the type of fitting, how many, how high to hang it and what kind of light it should give.

Why kitchen island lighting matters

Kitchen island lighting is far more than a light in the middle of the ceiling. It makes the worktop safe and comfortable for preparing food, it sets the mood of the room, and it adds a piece of design that completes the style of your kitchen. Good island lighting balances the practical and the decorative.

In a well-lit kitchen, the island is only one of several layers of light. General lighting on the ceiling lights the whole room; the island lighting lights the work surface; under-cabinet strips or wall lights look after the worktops along the walls. The island light should never be your only source: on its own, it leaves the rest of the room in shadow and makes the worktop glare by contrast. Our guide to kitchen lighting covers every zone of the room; here we focus on the island.

Which kitchen island lights should you choose?

Three families of fittings suit a kitchen island. The pendant is by far the most popular, but the other two have their place.

Pendants bring the light down close to the worktop, exactly where you need it, and give an open-plan kitchen a real focal point. Black metal, glass, wood and brass are the most common finishes, in industrial, modern, Scandinavian or vintage styles.

There are three ways to arrange them. A single large pendant suits a small square island or a short one. Two or three pendants in a row, lined up above the island, are the classic layout: our 3-light glass and wood minimalist pendant, for example, groups three opal glass globes on a single ceiling plate, so it needs only one connection. A linear pendant, finally, lights the whole length of a long island evenly: our modern oak linear pendant light comes in 120 and 150 cm lengths, with a built-in LED in warm white (3,000 K) or neutral white (4,000 K). You will find more models with several shades among our 3-light pendants.

One large pendant for a short island, a row of two or three for a medium one, and a linear pendant for a long island: in every case, the light stays within the length of the worktop.

Ceiling lights: discreet and effective

If you prefer something more discreet, a flush ceiling light can work well. It gives even general light and keeps the space above the island clear, which suits a kitchen with a low ceiling, where a pendant would get in the way of your head or the view. The limit is distance: from the ceiling, it lights the worktop from further away than a pendant, so choose one with plenty of output. Our guide to how many lumens you need puts a figure on it for each room.

Spotlights: clean and minimal

Spotlights in a line above the island draw a row of light with no visual clutter at all, and many can be angled. Recessed downlights need a suspended or hollow ceiling and are a bigger installation job; surface-mounted spot ceiling lights give a similar effect on a solid ceiling.

How to match the fitting to your kitchen’s style

The island light is seen from every corner of an open-plan room, so it should belong to the kitchen around it.

Modern kitchen. Choose clean shapes that disappear into a minimal scheme: black metal, smoked glass, simple geometry or a slim linear pendant. Our design smoked glass 3-light pendant brings three tinted globes together on one black frame, 33 cm long, which suits a compact island.

Industrial kitchen. Go for fittings with a loft feel. Industrial pendant lights in raw metal, often with visible bulbs, suit brick, concrete and dark cabinets. Steel, copper and black iron give strong character and a warm mood in the evening.

Classic or Scandinavian kitchen. For a timeless look, glass pendant lights, brass or wood add refinement. These materials sit easily in a kitchen where wood and neutral colours dominate, and give a soft, diffused light.

What kind of light for a kitchen island?

The island light has two jobs: letting you see clearly to prepare food, and creating a pleasant atmosphere when you sit down to eat. Three criteria reconcile the two.

Colour temperature. A warm white of 2,700 to 3,000 K creates a welcoming mood, ideal in a kitchen that opens onto the living room. A neutral white of 4,000 K makes sense if the island is mainly a work surface in a closed kitchen; beyond that, the light turns cold and unflattering for a living space. Integrated LED linear pendants often let you choose between the two. In the evening, the warmer option is also the better one for your sleep: consensus recommendations published in 2022 by sleep and circadian researchers advise keeping the light that acts on the body clock to a minimum from three hours before bedtime.

Colour rendering. To judge whether meat is cooked or vegetables are fresh, colours need to look true. Since 1 September 2021, the EU ecodesign regulation for light sources has required a colour rendering index (CRI) of at least 80 for most bulbs sold for indoor use; a higher CRI, shown on the packaging, renders the colours of food even better. The same regulation also limits visible flicker from LED bulbs.

Dimming. Dimmable LED bulbs with a compatible dimmer switch let you turn the light up to cook, then down for dinner. Check that the bulb says “dimmable” and that the dimmer is rated for LED, as our guide to the dimmer switch explains.

How high and how many lights over a kitchen island?

The height matters as much as the model. Hung too high, a pendant lights the worktop poorly and seems to float; too low, it dazzles and cuts the view from one side of the island to the other. Rather than a fixed figure, use these checks on site:

  • Keep the view clear. Sitting on a stool or standing, you should see the face of the person opposite without the shade cutting across it, and you should not see a bare bulb.
  • Test before you fix. Ask someone to hold the pendant at different heights while you sit and stand at the island, and mark the height that works for the tallest person in the house.
  • Choose an adjustable cable. Most pendants are adjusted when they are fitted: our 3-light glass and wood pendant measures 124 cm in total height, cable included, and the oak linear pendant adjusts up to 150 cm, which leaves plenty of room under a standard ceiling.
  • Space them evenly. For a long island, use several identical pendants or one linear fitting. Leave the same gap between each pendant and a margin at both ends of the island, so the light does not fall off the edge of the worktop.
  • Scale the fitting to the island. A small island can take one large pendant; a long island calls for a row, or a linear pendant a little shorter than the worktop.

If the hob is on the island, the extractor and the lights will compete for the same space. Two solutions: a downdraft extractor built into the worktop, or pendants placed on either side of the hood rather than above the hob.

Installing kitchen island lights in Ireland

  • Check the ceiling point. If the existing light point is not centred over the island, a multi-light pendant on a single ceiling plate, or a fitting with an offset canopy, can save opening up the ceiling.
  • Know who does what. Swapping a pendant on an existing ceiling point is a common job, but new wiring is not DIY in Ireland. Most electrical work in a home is Restricted Electrical Works under S.I. No. 264 of 2013, including any new circuit, and can only be carried out and certified by a Registered Electrical Contractor, who gives you a Completion Certificate. Moving a light fitting without affecting the circuit counts as minor works; if a Registered Electrical Contractor does it, you can ask them to certify it.
  • Protection. Under the National Rules for Electrical Installations, I.S. 10101, every lighting circuit in a home must be protected by an RCD rated at no more than 30 mA.
  • Check the fixing. A glass pendant or a linear bar can weigh well over a kilo: our 3-light glass and wood pendant weighs 1.4 kg. The fixing must suit your ceiling.
  • Use LED bulbs. They last a long time and run cool, which matters when a light hangs close to your head.
  • Repeat a material. Pick up the metal of the tap or the wood of the stools in the finish of the pendant for a kitchen that hangs together.

Kitchen island lighting: frequently asked questions

What type of lighting is best for a kitchen island?

Pendant lights, in most kitchens: they bring the light close to the worktop and give an open-plan room a focal point. Choose one large pendant for a small island, two or three in a row for a medium one, or a linear pendant for a long island. Flush ceiling lights and spotlights suit low ceilings or very minimal kitchens.

How high should pendant lights hang over a kitchen island?

Low enough to light the worktop well, high enough not to dazzle or block the view. Test it on site: have someone hold the pendant while you sit and stand at the island, check that you can see the person opposite and cannot see a bare bulb, then fix the cable at that height.

How many pendant lights over a kitchen island?

It depends on the length of the island and the size of the shades. A short island needs one large pendant, a medium island usually takes two or three identical pendants, and a long island a longer row or a linear pendant. Space them evenly and leave a margin at both ends of the worktop.

What size should kitchen island lights be?

Keep them in scale with the island: a linear pendant a little shorter than the worktop, or a row of pendants that stops short of both ends. Think about ceiling height and sightlines too, because large globes hung low hide the person opposite. An adjustable cable lets you fine-tune the height when it is fitted.

What colour temperature is best for kitchen island lighting?

A warm white of 2,700 to 3,000 K suits most kitchens, especially open-plan ones. A neutral white of 4,000 K can make sense for an island used mainly as a work surface. Whichever you choose, look for a colour rendering index of 80 or more so food looks as it should.

Can you put pendant lights over a hob on an island?

It is best avoided: the extractor and the light get in each other’s way, and cooking fumes soon coat the shades. If the hob is on the island, choose a downdraft extractor built into the worktop, or place the pendants on either side of the hood, over the prep and dining areas rather than the hob.
