Bedroom Ceiling Light: How to Choose the Size, Height and Light

Tips & advice

Wavy rattan chandelier switched on above a bed in a linen and taupe bedroom in the evening, its weave casting a pattern of light across the ceiling

The best bedroom ceiling light gives soft, glare-free light, hides its bulb and leaves about 2 metres of clear headroom below it: on a 2.5 m ceiling, it should drop no more than 50 cm. Pair it with a warm white, dimmable bulb and a separate reading light by the bed.

The bedroom is the one room where you look at the ceiling lying down. A light that dazzles or hangs too low gets noticed every single evening. Our bedroom ceiling lights, bedroom chandeliers and bedroom pendant lights run from rattan shades to opal glass and brushed metal. This guide will not pick one for you: it gives you the criteria and the measurements to take before you buy, so you can decide for yourself.

Four questions are enough: how high is the ceiling, where is the bed, what light do you want in the evening, and what style sets the tone of the room? Take them in that order, because the ceiling height rules out part of the choice straight away.

What type of ceiling light is best for a bedroom?

No single light makes a good bedroom: it is the way several sources work together. It matters even more against a dark wall, as our teal bedroom ideas show. Each one has its own job.

Reading light by the bedReading without disturbing your partnerAdjustable wall light, bedside lamp
Mood lightSoft, low light before sleepDimmable lights, table lamp, indirect light

The ceiling light does not need to be very bright. In a bedroom, it is there to help you find your way, choose your clothes and tidy up. Reading happens under a lower light right by the bed, and in the evening the ceiling light can stay dimmed or off altogether. That is why, in a bedroom more than anywhere else, the best ceiling light is one that looks good switched off, hides its bulb when it is on, and can be turned down.

What size should a bedroom ceiling light be, and how low can it hang?

Start with the height, not the diameter. There is no Irish rule on the clear height below a light fitting in a home, so we recommend leaving about 2 metres between the lowest point of a pendant or chandelier and the floor, enough for a tall person to walk underneath without ducking. Measure your ceiling height and take away 2 metres: what is left is the total height the light can have, ceiling rose and flex included.

Under a sloping ceiling in an attic conversion, or in any room where the ceiling is low, a flat ceiling light that sits tight against the ceiling is often the only fitting that keeps enough headroom. It is also the safest choice in a child’s room, where a low pendant is easy to hit with a toy or a raised hand.

Scale diagram of two bedrooms: under a 2.50 m ceiling the light can be up to 50 cm tall, under a 2.20 m ceiling in a room in the roof only a flush ceiling light fits, each keeping 2.00 m of clear headroom
About 2 metres of clear headroom below the light decides how much room is left for the fitting itself. Drawn to scale.

There is no standard for the diameter either. The most reliable way to judge it is to see it: cut a cardboard disc to the diameter of the model you like and hold it up to the ceiling. A light that looks right in a showroom often looks enormous above a 135 cm double bed in a small bedroom. Many models come in several sizes: the rattan chandelier in our photo, for example, comes in a smaller and a larger diameter, so you can match it to the room rather than the other way round.

Should the ceiling light go above the bed?

The ceiling point in most bedrooms is in the middle of the room, which usually means above the foot of the bed or the space beside it. That is a good position: the light falls on the wardrobe and the floor where you walk, and the fitting sits outside your line of sight when you lie down.

Directly above the bed, nobody walks upright, so the 2 metre guideline matters less. Two precautions still apply. First, a light right above your head is seen head-on as soon as you lie down: it must hide the bulb completely, with an opaque shade, an opal glass diffuser or a bowl. Second, leave enough room to sit up in bed and get out without touching it.

If the ceiling point is in the wrong place, a swag hook in the ceiling lets you move a pendant sideways without new wiring. The flex then drapes across to the hook, which is part of the look with a natural fibre shade. Moving the ceiling point itself is electrical work, which we come back to below.

What light is best for a bedroom?

In the evening, the bedroom is where you wind down for sleep, and light plays a real part in that. In a controlled study published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, exposure to ordinary room light of under 200 lux before bedtime suppressed the sleep hormone melatonin, delaying its onset in 99 % of participants and shortening its duration by about 90 minutes compared with dim light. The HSE gives the same advice in its sleep tips: keep the bedroom as dark as possible at night, and avoid screens in the hour before bed because their blue light affects the body clock.

In practice, that comes down to three simple settings:

  1. A bulb at 2,700 K or 3,000 K. The colour temperature has to be printed on the packaging of every bulb sold in the EU, in kelvins, so it is easy to check. Warm white at this level suits a bedroom; keep 4,000 K and cooler whites for a kitchen or a home office. Our guide to LED bulbs explains how to read the box.
  2. A light you can turn down. A ceiling light on a dimmer switch, with LED bulbs marked “dimmable” and a dimmer rated for LEDs, goes from tidying light to night light. Dim to warm bulbs, which European rules define as shifting to a lower colour temperature as they dim, give the amber glow of an old filament bulb at low levels.
  3. A hidden source. Seen from below, a bare bulb dazzles. Shades in fabric, paper or woven rattan soften the light and throw a gentle pattern on the ceiling.

The ceiling light does not need to be strong: in a bedroom, it is for tidying, making the bed and getting dressed. Reading and winding down happen under lower lamps, which we cover further down.

Switching off from the bed

In many bedrooms the only switch is by the door, which means getting up in the dark to turn the light off. There are three ways round it. An electrician can add a second switch by the bed, so the ceiling light is switched from two places; in Ireland that is electrical work for a Registered Electrical Contractor. Smart bulbs let you dim or switch the ceiling light from your phone, a remote or a voice assistant, with no new wiring, as long as the wall switch stays on. And the simplest answer of all is a bedside lamp or a reading wall light with its own switch, so the ceiling light is only used for tidying and the evening light comes from beside the bed.

Which bedroom ceiling light suits which style?

The material decides how light leaves the fitting, and in a bedroom that matters more than anything else. The table sums up the main types and their effect.

Clear glass, crystal, dropsSparkling, reflectionsClassic, romanticVisible bulb, glare when lying down
Metal with arms or spotsDirected, crisperIndustrial, modernAim spots at the walls

For a natural style, a rattan chandelier is the safest choice: it hides the bulb and draws a web of light across the ceiling that decorates the room on its own. For a calm, pared-back bedroom, a Japandi chandelier in light wood and opal glass gives an even light with no glare. In a child’s bedroom, safety comes before style: light materials, a bulb out of reach and light you can turn down.

Flush, pendant or chandelier: which is best for a bedroom?

All three fix to the ceiling, but not in the same way. A chandelier carries several light sources or a decorative frame, a pendant hangs on a flex with a single source, and a flush ceiling light sits tight against the ceiling.

A good compromise for a 2.5 m ceiling is a semi-flush or flush mount chandelier, whose decorative frame stays close to the ceiling. It has the presence of a chandelier without taking up the headroom.

Add wall lights and bedside lamps to the ceiling light

A ceiling light on its own, in the middle of the room, lights the bedroom from above and casts shadows over the bed. To read, you need a lower light closer to you. There are two ways to get it: a lamp on the bedside table, or a wall light on each side of the headboard, which frees up the bedside table.

Black reading wall light with a flexible arm switched on above a linen headboard, lighting an open book on the pillow
The reading wall light with an adjustable head in black steel fixes beside the headboard: its flexible arm aims the light at the page without lighting up the pillow next to it.

Choose adjustable reading wall lights with a switch within reach: you aim the light at the book without lighting up the pillow next to you. Before drilling, sit up in bed in your usual reading position and find the height at which the head of the light falls on the page without dazzling you. Headboard lights do the same job and keep the bedside tables clear.

With these two layers in place, the ceiling light can stay on a low setting or off in the evening, and becomes the general light for tidying and dressing.

Small bedrooms, attic rooms and children’s rooms

In a small bedroom, a box room or a single room, the ceiling light has to work harder with less space. Choose a compact or flush fitting with a pale, translucent shade: it spreads light to the walls, which makes the room look larger, and it does not eat into the headroom. A large shade in a small room looks heavy even when it technically fits. A single fitting in the middle of the ceiling is usually enough, with a small lamp or a wall light by the bed.

In an attic room or a room in the roof, the ceiling is often low on one side and sloping. Keep the ceiling light where the ceiling is highest, where you stand up, and choose a flush or semi-flush model. On a slope, check that the fitting is made for a sloping ceiling, or that its flex can hang straight from an angled ceiling plate. Wall lights on the low side light the bed without anyone hitting a pendant.

In a child’s bedroom, safety comes before style. Choose light materials, a bulb that little hands cannot reach, and a light you can turn right down for the bedtime story. A flush ceiling light or a pendant set high above the floor avoids the risk of a toy or a jumping child knocking it. Our children’s chandeliers are chosen with that in mind, and a warm, dimmable light makes the move from play to sleep easier.

Mistakes to avoid with a bedroom ceiling light

Most disappointments come from a handful of mistakes. They rarely show on a product photo, and they all show up within a week.

The first is choosing on diameter without checking height. Many product pages give the total height with an adjustable flex: check the height of the light itself, ceiling rose included, and compare it with the space left above your 2 metres of headroom. The second is leaving the bulb visible from the bed. A light with bare bulbs or clear glass looks superb in a dining room, where you sit. In a bedroom you look at it from below, the bulb lands in your line of sight and dazzles. Keep such models for large bedrooms, away from the head of the bed, or use crown-silvered bulbs.

The third is a cool white bulb. An LED at 4,000 K or 6,500 K gives a bluish light that suits a garage but feels harsh in a bedroom at night, and even the softest shade loses its effect with it. The fourth is relying on the ceiling alone: a single central light leaves the corners and the headboard in shadow, so plan at least one low lamp by the bed, and a light near the wardrobe if it sits far from the centre. The fifth is forgetting the upkeep: rattan, pleated fabric and crystal drops gather dust, and a feather duster or a soft dry brush once a month is enough for rattan. For glass, switch off and let the bulb cool before cleaning.

Last, check the bulb cap. The product page gives the cap of the lampholder and says whether a bulb is included. Many fittings designed for the European market take an E27 or E14 screw bulb rather than the B22 bayonet found in most Irish homes, so a spare bulb from the press may not fit.

Fitting a bedroom ceiling light safely in Ireland

Swapping one ceiling light for another on the same ceiling point is, in the words of Safe Electric, minor work: like-for-like replacements and moving a light fitting without affecting the circuit fall outside Restricted Electrical Works. A new ceiling point, a new circuit or any change to the fuse board is restricted work, which only a Registered Electrical Contractor may carry out and certify. If you are not completely at ease with wiring, have a registered electrician fit the light and ask for the completion certificate.

Whoever does the job, a few rules always apply. Switch off at the fuse board, not just at the wall switch, and check that the circuit is dead. The weight of the light must hang from the ceiling hook or fixing bracket, never from the wires. On plasterboard, use a fixing rated for the weight given by the manufacturer. Set the flex length before you fix the ceiling rose for good, allowing for the 2 metres of headroom.

The method is simple: measure the ceiling height, take away 2 metres, keep the models that fit into the space left, then choose the one among them that hides its bulb and suits the style of the room. Add a warm white bulb and a reading light, and the bedroom will be lit for everything you do in it.

Bedroom ceiling light: frequently asked questions

How do you choose a ceiling light for a bedroom?

Measure the ceiling height first and take away about 2 metres of clear headroom: what is left is the maximum height of the light, ceiling rose included. Then choose a model that hides its bulb, since you see it from below when lying down, a material that suits the style of the room, and a warm white, dimmable bulb.

What type of ceiling light is best for a bedroom?

One that gives soft, glare-free light and hides the bulb: a fabric or rattan shade, opal glass or a bowl-shaped diffuser. Under a low ceiling, a flush ceiling light keeps the headroom; with 2.7 m or more, a pendant or chandelier works well. Put it on a dimmer and add a reading light by the bed.

Which lights are best for a bedroom?

A bedroom works best with two or three layers: a ceiling light for general light, a reading light by the bed, either a bedside lamp or an adjustable wall light, and a soft mood light for the evening. Use warm white bulbs of 2,700 K to 3,000 K and a dimmer, so the room goes from tidying light to a gentle glow before sleep.

What size ceiling light for a bedroom?

Height matters more than diameter. We recommend about 2 metres of clear headroom below the light: under a 2.5 m ceiling, the light should be no more than 50 cm tall, under 2.7 m no more than 70 cm. For the diameter, hold a cardboard disc of the model’s size up to the ceiling: it is the best way to judge its proportions in the room.

Can you put a light above the bed?

Yes, as long as it hides the bulb completely, since you see it head-on when lying down, and leaves enough room to sit up and get out of bed without touching it. It must hang from the ceiling hook or bracket, never from its wires. A swag hook lets you place a pendant above the bed if the ceiling point is elsewhere.

What colour light is best for a bedroom?

A warm white of 2,700 K or 3,000 K, shown in kelvins on the packaging of every bulb sold in the EU. Research shows that ordinary room light before bedtime delays the sleep hormone melatonin, so a warm, dimmable light in the evening is the better choice. Keep 4,000 K and cooler whites for a kitchen or a home office.
